P2.136: Outcomes of Brooklyn Parenting Center; Integrating Social and Emotional care Across the first Thousand Days in a Safety Net Healthcare System

Background: The first 1,000 days is a critical time, impacting health outcomes into adulthood. The medical system interacts with families more frequently during this time than any other system, providing an opportunity to foster resilience and break intergenerational trauma through interventions promoting positive childhood experiences and early relational health. We created the Brooklyn Parenting Center (BPC)in September of 2023 to provide dyadic integrated care to families already seeking medical care prenatally, in the NICU or Mother Baby Unit, or at pediatric primary care who are at risk or currently experiencing unmet social or emotional needs. Objectives of this study are to evaluate outcomes of BPC by evaluating 1) Patients reached by BPC, 2) and Impact on wellbeing and parenting capabilities.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional telephone survey of families seen by BPC between September 2023 and June 2024. We used multivariable logistic regression to predict likelihood of survey response by demographics, chi square to compare across demographic groups levels of satisfaction and impact of program intervention, and a linear regression model to predict reported differences in post intervention parenting and wellness skills.

Results: 22.9% (294/1,283) patients completed surveys, representing 11 unique primary languages and 8 races. Families who speak languages other than English were less likely to complete the survey (aOR = 0.465 (0.283-0.761, p=0.002) (Table 1). Respondents reported high impact of BPC services on their overall wellbeing (N = 203, 77.7%), ability to parent the way they wanted to (N = 192, 73.6%), satisfaction with BPC services (N = 225, 86%), and felt they were able to access services and resources needed (N = 248, 93.2%), with no significant difference found among language, race, ethnicity, or religion in predicting these outcomes. 89% (N = 261) had never met with someone for mental health before meeting with BPC. There was a significant increase in knowledge post intervention in a) the impact of the way they were parented when they were young on their current growing family (a= 0.71 (0.613-0.806), b) parenting strategies (a = 0.46 (0.376-0.543), and c) coping skills to manage stress or anxiety (a = 0.562 (0.473-0.651). With no significant difference found for religion, language, race, and ethnicity.

Conclusion: The BPC serves a diverse range of families across three integrated touch points, who previously had not met with mental health specialists. Families reported BPC improved overall wellbeing, parenting abilities and access to resources or services they needed during pregnancy and early childhood.
